What is a Shadow Box Frame?

A shadow box frame is a deep-set frame with a glass front that creates a space between the glass and backing board where small, 3D objects and photos can be arranged and displayed. A shadow box frame can also include an optional window mat board. It's called a 'shadow box' because the high sides of the frame and the mat board can cast a shadow on the items inside, demonstrating depth.

Shadow box frames can be a unique and versatile way to display items that hold special meaning or sentimental value. These frames are typically rectangular in shape but can also come in common square sizes too.

When choosing a shadow box frame, it is important to consider the size of the item(s) you want to display as well as the overall aesthetic you wish to achieve. Some frames come with removable window matboard options while others allow for customisation by adding your own coloured backings.

With their ability to showcase cherished memories in an attractive yet practical manner, shadow boxes have become increasingly popular in recent years among interior decorators as well as everyday consumers looking for creative ways to personalise their living spaces.

What is a Shadow Box Frame used for?

Shadow box frames are commonly used to display physical items such as sports memorabilia, military medals and family heirlooms. There's no limit to what you can display in a shadowbox frame, but some of the most popular ideas would include wedding keepsakes, jewelry, baby items, seashells, 3D wooden scrabble letters, baby clothes, baby shoes and booties, collectable figurines, decorative ornaments, travel souvenirs and other cherished mementos.

The depth of the frame allows for three-dimensional arrangements that make the displayed objects stand out and pop against the background. Many people even like to place normal photos and pictures inside a shadowbox frame, just for a more dramatic and deeper effect! Shadow boxes also offer protection from dust, sunlight, and other environmental factors that could damage delicate or valuable items.

One DIY use for shadow box frames is to display personal memorabilia such as medals, awards, concert tickets, pet toys, necklaces and other sentimental items. By placing these items in a shadow box frame, they can be showcased on a wall or shelf instead of being hidden away in storage. Shadow box frames can be a unique and interesting way to decorate your walls with something more personal and interesting to you and your loved ones.

Shadow box frames can also be used to showcase artwork such as 3D paper sculptures, paper tole, scrapbook pages or collages. Shadow box frames are also popular for displaying their military medals or badges earned during service. The items can be displayed in an attractive manner within the frame while keeping them protected from dust and moisture.

Overall, shadow box frames offer endless possibilities when it comes to displaying cherished items in a creative way that captures attention and preserves memories for years to come. Shadow box frames displaying personal memories and items can also make the perfect gift for a loved one.

What’s the difference between a Box Frame and a Shadow Box Frame?

A Box frame is a just a picture frame that is higher and deeper when it hung, resting off a wall. This type of frame is still similar to regular picture frames, but with a larger depth between the glass and the picture. Box frames are designed to display a flat artwork or photograph whilst providing an attractive depth and more dramatic appearance. A standard box frame can sometimes be referred to as a gallery-style picture frame, typical of a frame that might be seen in an art exhibition at an art gallery.

Shadow box frames are a special type of box frame that has a deeper internal depth than a regular box frame. Shadow box frames can also be specifically designed to accommodate objects creating a three-dimensional effect. This allows items to be displayed at varying depths within the frame.

One advantage of shadow box frames is that they allow for more creative freedom in terms of arranging and displaying objects. The deeper internal depth allows for multiple layers of items to be displayed in an aesthetically pleasing way. Additionally, shadow box frames come in various shapes and sizes, so there's always one that suits your specific needs.

Overall, the difference between a shadow box frame and a regular frame is significant when it comes to framing 3D objects like awards or artifacts. Shadow boxes offer versatility in terms of what kind of object you want to display while adding dimensionality to your wall decor.

Our box frames come in different depths, for example our Decorator Box Frames are 30mm deep, and our Brighton Box Frames are 37mm deep. Our Gallery Box Oak Frames are slightly deeper again at 40mm deep.

If you're looking for box frames, then we're sure to have a style and size of box frame that will suit your needs!

What’s the difference between a Shadow Box Frame and a standard photo frame?

Shadow box frames and standard frames are two types of picture frames that serve different purposes. A standard frame is a simple, flat frame that is designed to encase a photograph or artwork. It usually has a glass front and can be hung on walls or displayed on tables.

Shadow box frames on the other hand, are deeper than traditional frames, allowing for three-dimensional objects to be placed inside and create depth. They typically come with removable backings which make it easy to arrange items inside the frame and they often have a deeper border to accommodate more volume.

In addition, shadow box frames are commonly used for showcasing objects from special events such as medals, newborn babies, graduations, weddings, holidays or anniversaries. They offer an elegant way of displaying keepsakes from these occasions while also providing protection against damage from dust and moisture. Overall, while both types of frames serve their respective functions well, shadow box frames provide greater versatility in terms of what they can hold within them compared to standard picture frames.

What sizes do Shadow Box Frames come in?

Our collection of deeper shadow box frames come in either square or rectangle shapes, in a wide variety of sizes that can accommodate different objects and purposes. The three most popular sizes for shadow box frames are 8x8 inches (20x20cm), 8x10 inches (20x25cm) and 12x14 inches (30x35cm). Common sizes are as follows:

      • 6x8in (15x20cm) with a 4x6in (10x15cm) window mat board - 20mm working depth
      • 8x8in (20x20cm) with a 6x6in (15x15cm) window mat board - 20mm working depth
      • 8x10in (20x25cm) with a 5x7in (13x18cm) window mat board - 20mm working depth
      • 10x10in (25x25cm) with an 8x8in (20x20cm) window mat board - 20mm working depth
      • 12x14in (30x35cm) with an 8x10in(20x25cm) window mat board - 20mm working depth
      • 14x14in (35x35cm) with a 12x12in (30x30cm) window mat board - 20mm working depth

Smaller sized shadow box frames are commonly used to display jewelry or small trinkets, while larger sized frames can hold sports memorabilia or even clothing items such as baby booties and clothes.

When choosing a size for your shadow box frame, it is essential to consider the object you want to display and the space where you plan to hang it. It is also vital to check the internal depth of the frame as some objects may require more depth than others. Ultimately, selecting the right size will ensure that your cherished items are beautifully displayed in a way that complements both them and their surroundings.
