What role does sustainability play in The English Soap Company's overall strategic plan?

There’s a growing awareness that the world is facing a packaging crisis and we believe that urgent action is required from everyone to reduce overall packaging use and to secure a future that’s free from plastic pollution.

Everyone involved with The English Soap Company, including staff across all roles, suppliers and distributors, are now working together to find innovative solutions to make our business as sustainable as possible.

As a company with sustainability at its heart, every decision is made with environmental responsibility in mind. Since the beginning of the company 25 years ago our philosophy has been to drive towards sustainability and strive to improve our products, packaging and working methods to reduce our carbon footprint and make the planet a better place.

What sustainability initiatives has the English Soap Company implemented?

The focus is on making sustainable, ethical products that are fully recyclable and long lasting. Minimal packaging is used, recycled plastics where possible, and recyclable aluminium tubes for products like hand creams.

Our vegetable oils are sourced from RSPO accredited suppliers and fragrances are synthetic which has less impact on the environment than land-intensive production.

Local suppliers are used where possible and The English Soap Company’s success has had a knock on, positive effect for these local and small businesses.

Packaging, fragrances and printing services all come from East Sussex, England, where our headquarters are located. We only buy paper and card that are FSC certified. By doing this we know we are not having a negative impact on the planet.

Our wholesale customers recognise the importance of our products being FSC certified as part of their compliance and due diligence, and it is a selling point for us.

What happens to your non-reusable boxes?

With our cardboard shredder, every single shred of card can now go into packing out orders to keep them nice and snug for delivery. Even though the card we use is fully recyclable the team try to be conscious, using only what is needed.

We also shred any unusable soap wraps, out of date brochures, papers and any other packaging materials that can be shredded and used again.

What is FSC certification?

FSC® is considered to be the most reputable and rigorous method of forest certification now in use. It is an independent, member-led organisation that promotes socially beneficial, environmentally sound, and economically successful management of the world’s forests.

The certification method for Chain of Custody traces the movement of goods across the supply chain. Find out more about FSC certification here.

Hand & Body Washes

We use PCR recycled plastic bottled for all of our liquid soaps such as hand and body washes.

Made from 100% post-consumer resin (PCR), our unique, amber-toned PETE 1 bottles are the best eco-friendly choice. Made from 100% recycled plastic waste these post-consumer resin (PCR) bottles reduce the production of new plastic.

What sets these liquid soap bottles apart is their ability to be recycled again, contributing to a sustainable cycle that helps combat global plastic pollution.

Additionally, the labels used on every PCR bottle is produced using ‘Forest Film’ which is a wood based raw material that is 100% renewable.

This material is made from pulp production residues, offering a renewable alternative to films that are fossil-based. This Forest Film is an ISCC certified (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) and is made using sustainable resources. Click here to learn more information about Forest Film.
